Writing Backwards

I have two younger sisters who are 8 year old twins. One of them, Katie, sometimes writes things backwards. She once had to write a story for school and she wrote it as if someone were to read it from right to left instead of left to right. She and her twin, Lucy, go to a Jewish school where they are taught Hebrew which is written from right to left. I'm guessing that when Katie is writing backwards she is taking the technical rules of Hebrew and applying them to English. Is this unusual?

Hey Lee,
That is an awesome story about your twin sisters! I did a little bit of research about this, and although I couldn't find any information about a case exactly like it, I did find some information about mirror writing. Apparently, mirror writing occurs more often in left-handed people (although this was refuted in the article below). Is Katie left-handed? You can find the article about mirror-writing at this website: http://content.apa.org/journals/bul/25/10/582.

Oh, and by the way, Leonardo da Vinci wrote backwards very frequently, so maybe your sister is the next da Vinci! :D

Thanks for doing that research, Rachel! Katie is not left-handed. Although, I think she can write with her left hand. It's so interesting watching her and Lucy interact, because they are so different. Lucy is very structure and rules oriented and Katie is very free spirited. It's cool seeing how different twins can be. That mirror-writing article looks really good, though. Thanks for looking it up!

my sister is left-handed, and when she was younger (she is 9 now) she would write backwards all the time. It is very strange, but she can still write backwards when she chooses. and although she does know how to write normally, she can also mirror-write on command. it makes for very good secret notes that she passes to me during dinner. It is very interesting to read that left-handed people are the ones that mirror-write. I have found that the fact is definitely true.

i am left handed and although i am not quite sure why your twin sisters write backward still, i know that it is very common for lft-handers to start out doing that. when i was first learning to write, i wrote the mirror of everything (mirror writing) which is very unsual and i have no idea why...does nayone have any ideas on that subject as well?

I'm interested in the explanation of what Nicolette mentioned as well. Is there something that was developed in her brain differently that made her do this?

Do you think age has anything to do with this? I mean, when you are older, you are still able to learn the skill of writing in 2 ways with no difficulty...

when i was really young, around 5-8, i sometimes mirror-wrote, without even realizing it. i often wrote my name backwards, and i can still remember when i was in 2nd grade, i mirror-wrote an intire paper on alligators without even realizing it until I finished.
i figured it was a sign of some sort of mental disorder originally, so i went and researched it, and found a lot of stuff on mirror writing being connected with being left handed (thats how i found this site, while researching mirror-writing)

(PS: i dont take psycholigy, I'm acually only a freshman in highschool)

I am not left-handed, but if I write with my left hand it is perfectly backwards. I was interested if this was a glitch in my brain because sometimes I get confused between right and left, too. There is no reason to think I'm dyslexic- I have no problems with academics. I am 36 and haven't struggle in school other than early math. It is curious...
