False Memories

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has any research on false memories... specifically ones that substantially affected the subject. Thanks so much!!

I searched on Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) for false memory and found many fascinating results that might interest you too. The fourth article, titled "The Formation of false memories" was particularly helpful, and it talks about how memory can be distorted through suggestion of memories that the subject slowly begins to believe are true. These researchers "reminded" subjects about a time they got lost in a mall, and not only did the subjects believe it, they also elaborated on other details of the "memory". Hope that helps!

I also searched google scholar and found an interesting article on creating false memories. This article was written by a Washington University Professor, enjoy.

Hi again,

I realized that I had this article saved to my computer for a project I did in high school. I wasn't sure if you wanted to read about children but here is another good article to look at.

There is a lot of interesting research being done on false memories. See the previous post on it from July 18 and also Gavin's comment to that post.

i think that also has something to do with cryptomnesia, at least that is the first thing i thought of when i saw your blog post. i think it is an interesting "disease" i wonder if we will actually ever find out if it is real. are there any studies goign on to investigate that anyone knows of?

There are so many examples of false memories. In movies, an example of false memory could be in the movie 12 Angry Men (which is a great movie). The participants in the movie create false memories as time goes on to fill the holes in the witnesses' stories. but people outside of movies also have false memories. usually the memories are created by trauma or an experience in childhood that they want repressed. Sometimes, this is dangerous as it sometimes leaves unexplained holes in a person's memory.

It seems that there are everyday cases of false memories..especially in my life...I was wondering the difference between false memories and just regular plain forgetfulness
