Not a false memory...

...but it may have been a dream. Well, it's probably in the book somewhere...I just need to find it. This is regarding the little disagreement we had during the review session regarding commissurotomy vs. callosotomy. Please check out the above wikipedia links. Are they the same or is there a difference between the two surgical procedures? Now, since Devika and I were both right, what is to be the outcome of the bet?

Hmmm, I'm not sure about Wikipedia as the end all be all source. I looked up the Handbook of Neuropsychology and found on page 104 the difference.

"The term 'split-brain' is generally applied to both callosotomy and commissurotomy although there are subtle differences between the two. Callosotomy involves separation of both the corpus callosum and the hippocampal commissure, whereas in complete commissurotomy, the anterior commissure is also sectioned."

I guess Dev will have to buy you a Coke and you will have to buy her one!

Found it! Callosotomy is mentioned on the last line of page 137 of the textbook. This is in a latter part of chapter 4 (pattern recognition) that wasn't part of the reading material for the course. A 45 year old right-handed man, called J.W., underwent callosotomy to control severe epilepsy, and subsequently became 'split-brained'. I wonder why callosotomy wasn't listed in the index...?
